Last hurrah

Discussion revolved around the ubiquitous nature of learning through, and with digital technologies. It is easy to see how it brings equity to learning for all. I liked the 3 A's : anywhere, anytime, any pace, what a cool concept!

After investigating the summer learning journey I can see the advantages of promoting it to my students.

Slide 10 rang true for me.

Next the test but they dont want ot email me my result or acknowledge that I sat it.

Week 7 Media

You Tube and Me

Enjoyed our presentation on You Tube. I can see the advantages for growing the whanau  connection. I can see possibility for concerns to be raise from parents with their child's image being on the internet for ever.

You Tube allows for visible connections. This ties into the kaupapa of sharing through building authentic connection.

Connection

'It is hard to connect unless you are prepared to share'.. this is something I had not considered. The face to face connection is still important. Digital technologies prove additional opportunities to connect.

This is the all about me

Here is animation made in slides that can be posted directly to student blogs. It provides me with a simple claymation.

Week 6 -Visible

                                  Visible Learning

Visible is part of the kaupapa because everyone needs to know where they are on the learning journey. Learning needs to be visible to the teacher, whanau, and learners. The Learning Journey can be similar to wandering a maze. In the past success in learning where the learner has understood how to navigate the system.

Cultural capital has had a huge influence on the success on learner. There needs to be equity for all learners. The pedagogy adds to making teaching and learning visible for all children. If the planning and learning is there why not show the learners the path?

There are somethings that should be private, but the day to day learning needs to be available to all. Surprises throw learners, some of us are better able to adapt to surprises, most of us don't cope well with them. Technology removes the surprise for learners and whanau.

Deep Dive

Exploring other class sites has given insight as to how I can improve my own site. It is easy to see how you can make your site easier to navigate and more appealing.
I have added some rewindable learning and made my teaching groups more visible. I want to do a holiday learning activity grid for the term break.
I now have lots of ideas for my learning site for next year. Thanks heaps.

Quality Posts

The section on quality commenting  will help immensely in class. I have included blogging as part of my reading rotation but I now need to put up a display in class to support my learners and myself. I can also put this on my site so akonga can access this any place any time.

Week 5 Devices

Reflection

Had a lightbulb moment: teach what I am learning into groups rather trying whole class. I need to take the time to practise some of those skills on programmes a I am not familiar with so I can assist the students so I can teach and extend.

The Importance of Safe Cybersafety practice

Ensure we accent the positive effects of cyber citizenship.

Make sure we are consistent in the language so that the message is consistent. A next step would be to make myself familiar with the Kawa of Care.

This is something for me to think about. Teach about setting limits around personal space, everything you share is personal. But what do we want to keep private?

Consistent language enhances the message. What message am I sending? We are empowering them by using the vocabulary to use at home, in the future. Can I repurpose the planning to use cybersmart.

Hapara

I am still getting use to using Hapara. On reflection some of what I do and say seems punitive. Do I want to be perceived in this way?

Using Hapara in a positive way. The expectation is in each lesson, and what will be doing next? Smart learners know what to do next. We need to be in the right place at the right time, online we need to be positive, and helpful. Use it for sharing, Deep Dive on how I can check blog posts with out having to physically look at each screen. On Dashboard go to more.

Manaiakalani philosophy focuses on the three P's Partnership, Participation, and Protection.

Hapara protects and provides a safe way for students navigate their learning independently but still with support and guidance.

Screencastify

I have explored this in a toolkit. Now is my chance to use it for real! I can see it's power for  rewindable learning.

Computational Thinking

Sharing

Sharing is a basic human need. It is the speed of communication has changed, the audience has expanded to a global audience. I can see how this links to the create and share part of the Manaikalani pedagogy.

Computational Thinking

The sorting parallel algorithm was a neat practical activity to do with children. Am thinking of using this in class, getting the students to chose a number between 1 and one hundred. Yellow go left, green go right at each level. Getting the children to write the number down would avoid changes at the end.

Loved the discussions raised by Trailblazers.

The Binary Coding is another class activity that would be fun for the students to try.

I found the Toxic Code easier than the Scratch. Although I now have a basic knowledge of Scratch so I can interact with the students on this.

Workflow..

Let's hangout! Have experienced these before but it is nice to see the background. I can see the benefits both professionally and personally.

Calendars

I have developed my skills and understanding of the power of calendar. I haven't really used calendar, preferring the apple calendar. Switching between personal and school calendar
This will allow me to have a one stop shop.  Short cuts allow changing views: day -D, week -W, month -M.

I can create a hangout to connect and share ideas, and learn from the experience of others through sharing screens.

Keep

Enjoyed the Keep, again it allows me to have all of my to do list in a space where they are easily accessible. This will save the piece of paper moving to the bottom of the desk!

The text capture seemed useful but I need time to explore this  independently as I can see advantages but the session was a bit fast and I couldn't quite keep up. The joy of rewindable learning is that I know I can go back to this.

G Mail

I want to spend more time learning the shortcuts for G Mail. My in box is way more organised and I have got I have archived stuff I am no longer actively using but don' t want  to lose. Have a tidy inbox will reduce the stress of unanswered email, or an obscene number of emails showing as unopened in my inbox.

Shifting between boxes will be easier with G- D (drafts), G I (inbox), G S (sent).  I like the idea of being able to reply but schedule the response. I can set up a whole class email but schedule for it not to go until class time. When I add comments on the students work I can delay them until class, they will then learn to manage their time and not feel pressured to respond.

Taming Tabs

I have made a collection of tabs for the morning so I know I have all the tabs I need to start the day. This will ensure in movement I have all the tabs I need.
I can see this having application when I have planned units of work, having one tab that will open all the tabs I need for casting without delay when I am presenting to the class, they can all be sitting there waiting. It will also mean the students can also have their tabs ready and waiting because I can share those tabs. Through Hapara I can ensure that they only have the tabs they need for the unit of work open. This ties into the Kawa of Care, right place at the right time.

Recording of Hangouts

Recorded Hangouts will assist with rewindable learning. It is simple and efficient way to communicate ideas and share screens. I would to compare this with screencastify to investigate which will be easier for me to navigate. Or maybe they have advantages depending on the purpose.

Create

Create

Love the thought of considering different responses to learning tasks. I can see that this is going to take a mind shift on my part. The idea of an Immersion assembly.  I need to let my inner child to come to the surface.

I can relate to the need for the create part of the kaupapa. It binds the learning and cements understanding.

Multi Modal Learning

Loving learning about multi-modal content.

Created a really cool site today to help student learn through their preferred learning modality.

Go visit The Lorax

It would be great for tamariki to be able to use this to as away of showing the learning through create and share.

I realise that creating a site can be a quicker and easier as I do more of it.

Realising the potential of an authentic audience is as important for our students as it me as a teacher. Students are my audience and they deserve the best.

And So it Begins!

What a great bunch to go on this journey with

THE JOURNEY BEGINS

I understand why this is called Digital Fluency Intensive 😅Having an understanding of the background to Manaiakalani has opened my eyes... I have always thought of the technology as replacing the stationary, as in books. It makes more sense that it replaces the pencil! Knowing the Manaiakalani Journey has made me realise that my foray into digital learning is a journey and will open up a world of new possibilities as I travel, both personally and professionally.

Being able to work more fluently in Docs will give me more options as I generally work with slides. I like the option of being able to use text types will save a lot of time selecting, highlighting, make bold and changing fonts.

I can see heaps of applications with being able to select part of a website under headings that means leaners will not be bombarded with irrelevant or an overpowering amount of text. I can see a use of voice typing and the Read Write functions to equalise access and get a true picture of what my learners know without the typing barrier influencing the quality of their ability to absorb and share what they have learnt.

Being able to access a document changes will allow me to see the changes of a document and therefore better gauge a students spelling ability without it sanitised with spell check and other grammar tools.

Building digital fluency will help me work smarter not harder. Being able to complete tasks with increasing ease will enable me to better manage the intrusion of work into my personal life.

Thanks Nicole and Gerhard

Kia ora!
